Orthodontist Definition

If your teeth need straightening or if there are irregular gaps between your teeth, you are likely to see an orthodontist. An orthodontist definition is a specialized dentist who corrects misaligned teeth, helps teeth to grow in the right direction and deals with moving or straightening the teeth, for example with braces.  Some conditions an orthodontist treats are irregular bite, irregularly spaced or uneven teeth, and problems in the development and alignment of the jaw.  Most people get a referral to an orthodontist from a general dentist.

This specialist usually examines your teeth and makes an assessment about their health and their structure. S/he then decides what procedures are needed, such as removing a tooth or using braces. S/he will also look at your dental history and any previous treatments. The braces or other appliances are constructed based on the assessment and your dental record.  You will probably need to visit the orthodontist regularly to check your progress and to see if any adjustments need to be made to your braces.

Working in Orthodontics

Orthodontics  works with both adults and children. Many children wear braces when they are young to make sure the teeth grow evenly and straight. If abnormalities in the growth of your teeth are treated at an early age, such as when you are still in school, you can save yourself from many dental problems in later life including expensive treatments and operations. Many adults today wear braces to correct dental problems, too.  Some orthodontist treatments are necessary for the teeth and the jaw to function properly, but many are also done for cosmetic reasons.

This field is highly specialized and it is also very competitive. If you want to become an orthodontist, you will first have to complete college and then apply to dental school. Becoming a general dentist takes approximately four years and you will have to pass the dental school exams at the end of those four years. You will then have to apply to a specialized post-graduate program. The postgraduate studies generally last from two to three years. The schools are difficult to get into and you will be competing with a large amount of other applicants.  A dentist can only fulfil the orthodontist definition if s/he has successfully completed the postgraduate program. There are also national exams and tests you can take at the end of the program, and you might have to pass exams to become licensed and insured in this field.

The basic orthodontist definition is a specialist who treats misalignment in the teeth, but this area in dentistry is also very important for the patient’s self-esteem. Orthodontists are highly respected and valued dental practitioners and they are always in demand.
